A long-awaited release for fusion fans: the 24th Street Band's Japan tour.
This legendary group, which began its career as an opening act for the Sanborn Group in 1977 and shared the momentum of the "fusion boom" that swept Japan in the early '80s, has now toured Japan. This disc features two performances, one at Kubo Auditorium in September 1979 (Disc 1) and the other at Postal Savings Hall on January 17, 1981 (Disc 2), both recorded with high-quality stereo soundboards from the broadcast master. Nothing speaks more eloquently to the unique value of this band than the backgrounds of its members. Hiram Bullock (guitar), born in Osaka and raised in Panama and the United States, boasts a stellar career that began with teenage session work and has featured collaborations with numerous major musicians. Steve Jordan (drums), who played in Stevie Wonder's backing band before going on to work with countless R&B and rock artists, most recently in Japan with Eric Clapton's band. Texas-born Will Lee (bass), who began his career at the invitation of Randy Brecker and has also been prolific in session recordings, and New York-born Clifford Carter (keyboards), who was the musical center of the band and wrote most of 24th Street's songs, are also well-known for their work with James Taylor and Michael Franks. While this band is a collection of renowned veterans, at the time, they were taking a more song-focused approach than performance-based, making this a highly engaging release for fans.
