[The Beatles Anthology Project]
After years of planning, the "Anthology" project, which chronicles the history of The Beatles from their origins to their breakup, was announced in 1995 as a wide-ranging project that included a trilogy of rare recordings, books, and video works, including TV broadcasts, attracting the attention of Beatles fans worldwide. The trilogy of albums chronicles the band's history, from their pre-debut period through to their breakup. Featuring previously unreleased studio outtakes, TV footage, and live concert recordings, the project also features two new songs, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love," based on recordings left behind by John Lennon. The final new song in the trilogy, "Now and Then," remained unreleased at the time, but was finally released in 2023 for the first time in 27 years. It still garnered attention as the "final new Beatles song." Unreleased Beatles material was previously planned for release on the album "Sessions," but was shelved. In the 1980s, unofficial releases like "Ultra Rare Tracks" and "Underpast Masters" were unofficially released. The trilogy of albums and video works from this "anthology" project garnered significant attention at the time as a culmination of previously unreleased recordings and footage. However, "Anthology" is a carefully curated collection, featuring a vast amount of unreleased recordings from Abbey Road Studios and live recordings and footage from around the world, many of which have yet to be released. Future releases, including new discoveries, are anticipated.
[Anthology 3: Anniversary Edition]
This 30th Anniversary Edition of "Anthology Extra" features additional material not previously included in the "Anthology 1-3" series. It also includes newly unearthed outtakes and demos, not just those previously included in the highly anticipated "Anthology 4" release, but also newly edited, expanded, and revised versions of all 89 tracks. As with previous releases, the sound quality has been improved compared to the originals, and the album features more uncut editing and AI-edited demixing, converting mono to true stereo. This unmissable "Extra" edition features newly discovered and never-before-seen material, all remastered and based on new recordings. The album is primarily recorded chronologically, beginning with five demos recorded at Paul's home in 1960—none of which are covers. This historic record demonstrates that, as Paul stated in the film "Let It Be," he was already composing music on a daily basis at this time. The 1962 live performance at the Hamburg Star Club, after Ringo joined the band, is recorded in a newly restored, state-of-the-art stereo mix. The selection includes familiar Beatles numbers from later live performances, as well as original recordings and covers, highlighting their differences. The next three demos, from 1963, are newly discovered recordings, the existence of which had previously been rumored at auction. They include the Cavern recording of "Misery," the complete recordings of "Love of the Loved" and "What Goes On," and the longest version of "If I Fell." Many of the other studio outtakes have been converted from the original mono to stereo demixes, and the familiar outtakes have been updated in recent years, with different track sequences and edits. It's also noteworthy that the album includes carefully selected tracks not previously included in the official box set. Finally, three new tracks from the Anthology Project—"Free as a Bird," "Real Love," and "Now and Then"—are fully restored and remixed versions, distinct from the controversial official mixes. These are also new original remixes, distinct from those featured in the anniversary series. Incidentally, the jacket design features a pre-finished prototype and rough design, subtly different from the original. This "extra" release, a must-have for Beatles collectors, is a sequel to the newly edited, expanded, and revised 30th Anniversary Edition of "The Beatles Anthology" released in 2026. It includes previously unreleased tracks.
